It's REALLY COLD Out... Should You Still Walk Outside? Here's Our VERY Best Answer...

Whether you love to walk, you do it for good exercise, or both... once it gets really cold out, you may not feel like it. But then again, you don't want to go several months without the exercise that your body really needs. So, here's some of our thoughts so you can decide what is best for you...

First off, it depends on your age, your health, and what your doctor feels is best for you. Now, if you feel you can handle it, and it's not too frigid or windy, go for it if that's what you want to do! But you do need to prepare for the outside weather.

Walking outside in the cold with your children

Dress for the Occasion - First off, you want to wear synthetic wicking fabrics and waterproof breathable materials. Staying warm, dry, and comfy is a Godsend, so dress in layers as well to match the weather outside. That way, in the event you dress “too warm”, you can always peel layers off.

Warm Up Indoors – Believe it or not, it's better for your heart to warm up inside before exercising in the cold. Either march in place or walk around the house for a 5-10 minutes to get blood pumping through the leg muscles.

Safety is Key – First off, if you're walking in the dark, make sure you wear reflective clothing so oncoming traffic can easily see you. And if it is just too cold or windy outside, then don't risk it! Do some exercise in the house or head to the gym if you belong. Your safety is everything.

Walking outside in the cold with your dog

What About Walking Your Dog? – Well, a good thought in all of this is if it's too cold for you, it's probably too cold for your pooch. Now, “don't want to” and “really cold out” can be two different things so you need to do what you honestly feel is best for both of you. If it's below freezing outside, really old and young dogs should stay inside. The breed of your dog can determine your walking so check that out as well.

COFFEE is ACTUALLY GOOD for YOU?! We're Serious – You've Got to Check This Out NOW...

If you love coffee, this news may make you love it even more! Enjoying that savory morning drink is better for you than you even thought and in multiple ways. You may have heard some bad stuff in the past, especially about caffeine, but we've got some really great news you'll love to hear...

Believe It Or Not, Coffee is Chock Full of Antioxidants and Nutrients – First off, when it comes to antioxidants, coffee outdoes many veggies and fruits in your diet. It also contains a load of riboflavin (B2), pantothenic acid (B5), Niacin (B3), potassium and manganese. Just a few cups a day can really juice up your system!

Coffee beans

Burn Fat and Have Better Physical Performance – In two meta-analyses, caffeine improved exercise performance as much as 12%. It also increases oxidation of fatty acids while raising your metabolism.

Coffee Can Actually Make You Smarter? – Studies have proven that caffeine improves your brain function, reaction time, as well as your memory!

It May Dramatically Lower Your Risk of Getting Type 2 Diabetes – Those who drink a few cups of coffee a day seriously lower their risk of Type 2. The drop of risk depends on the person, but 18 different studies revealed a drop in risk from 23% to 67%. What was found was a 7% additional drop for each additional cup people drank. Amazing!

Coffee

Coffee Just Might Be Extremely Good for Your Liver – Coffee has been shown to lower your risk of liver cancer by as much as 40% and lower your risk of getting cirrhosis by as much as 80% which is just incredible news!

Now on the flip side, drinking “too much” coffee isn't overly healthy. Four cups, or 400 mg of caffeine is considered safe for most adults who are healthy. But then, a lot of people drink in excess of that without any health issues. Always check with your doctor for the best advice.

FALL RECIPE: Beer Can Chicken – The Juiciest, Tastiest Chicken You'll EVER Have!

This just might be the tastiest way to cook chicken on the grill – juicy, crispy, low carb, low fat, and unbelievably tasty! The beer steams the inside of the bird while it penetrates the meat, making it fall-off-the-bone delicious. Use a smaller 4 lb whole bird (cook at least 2 of them at a time). You can purchase beer can holders made for this so the chickens don't tip over (you can find them on the web). Now there are a number of ways you can season or marinate the chickens, but here's an amazing take...

The Marinade: Italian dressing and Teriyaki. Use Italian salad dressing with the little chunks of spices and slather the birds with it - then let them sit for an hour. Next, fill a small spray bottle with teriyaki sauce. The mixture of the Italian dressing and the teriyaki gives the meat a wonderful sweet and savory flavor.

Beer Can Chicken Recipe

IMPORTANT: You want to cook on indirect heat – medium temperature. If using a gas grill, only light the left and right burners and place the chickens right in the middle. If using a charcoal grill, place the coals to the right and the chicken to the left side.

Here we go... Very gently glide a half-filled can of beer (any beer will do) up the bird's cavity so its butt reaches the bottom of the can (a beer can holder for grilling will make this so much easier). Now place the birds on the grill where there is no flame. About every ten minutes give your chickens a half-turn and then spray them down with teriyaki sauce. This should take about an hour and a half to cook until the temperature of the breast meat reaches 165 degrees, so be sure to use a meat thermometer. When it's done, your bird will look a toasted golden brown - the juices will be dripping everywhere as the meat literally slides right off the bone. Now, the last thing to do is DIG IN!

Heat Therapy for Pain – Here's What You Absolutely NEED to KNOW About Thermotherapy!

When you've got pain, soreness and stiffness, Heat Therapy is a soothing godsend. But there are a few things you need to know before applying heat, and we're here to shed some very important light.

Plain and simple, muscle pain responds quite well to heat. It increases blood-flow to the muscles while increasing circulation and healing from soreness and pain. Thermotherapy is perfect for relieving achy soreness, muscle knots, spasms, muscle tightness and stiffness. It is mostly good for non-inflammatory pain, like the acute soreness you get for days after your first round of golf or a long first bike ride of the season. It's also effective for relieving muscle knots and trigger points.

Using heat to relieve muscle aches and pains

Heat acts like a natural analgesic, penetrating the skin's tissue while loosening up those tight muscles. That's why a hot bath or shower can be so effective as moist heat really gets down into the muscles. One amazing way to apply heat therapy while moving about your day are Rapid Relief Wrap compression garments made for backs, knees, and shoulders. They have built-in pockets for a heat gel pack that you pop in the microwave, strap on in seconds, and go about your day while getting the relief you need.

Using heat and massage to relieve muscle aches and pains

Now, what's equally as important to know is what heat therapy should NOT be used for. You NEVER want to apply heat to fresh injuries, pulled muscles, swelling, bruises, or any part of the body that is inflamed. (Think about it: put heating heat of something that is inflamed will make it even more inflamed!). These are the times you want to use ice (cryotherapy).

So, before go reaching for any pain medications to relieve soreness, try applying heat therapy and see what kind of results you achieve.

5 Key Ways to Relieve Pain & Stiffness in Your Knees

Whether it's from a minor injury or just too much stress on your joints, knee pain and stiffness can slow you down from living your everyday routine. Sometimes even just walking can be a task, but there are a few things you can do to help minimize the aches and pain while getting some real relief. Take a look at these 5 great suggestions...

Exercise? YES! – Too much sitting around and resting is not only counterproductive, it can actually weaken your muscles and make joint pain even worse. Talk to your doctor or a physical therapist to find out what exercises are good for you that won't put pressure on the knees. You can do some moderate cardio and light weight training, swimming, water aerobics and stationary bike.

Good Shoes & Orthotics – You will not believe what a positive difference this combo will make. Shoes with great arch support will surely help. But a really good pair of orthotic insoles can help to align your posture correctly, taking pressure off the knees and ankles.

REST healing method

RICE (No, Not Fried)Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation is good for when your joints are swollen from stressful activity or minor injury. This is the time you definitely want to give your knees some rest while keeping them elevated.

Weight Loss, Yeah... Sorry About This One – Pick up two 5 pound bags of sugar and you'll realize that they're kind of heavy. Well, for every 10 pounds overweight you are it's like you're hauling around those bags of sugar on your back. 50 pounds overweight means 10 whole bags...yow! I think you get the picture – if you can lose just a little bit of weight it will greatly take pressure off your knees, back, hips and ankles.

Knee pain

Compression Sleeves are Amazing! – Knee and ankle sleeves, and quality compression socks can really bring about some much-needed relief. They have been shown to help provide circulatory support for muscle stiffness, soreness and pain – reduce recovery time for aching muscles – and reduce strain and fatigue by keeping muscles warm. Definitely look into these!

Colorful Fall Veggies – 4 Sweet & Delicious, Super Easy to Make Recipes

Right now is the time of year when colorful, sweet and tasty fall vegetables are ready to cook up and grace our kitchen table. Whether you are roasting, sauteing, baking or frying, there are countless ways of cooking them. But you don't have to get fancy, as there are ways to whip up these delights of nature in a short amount of time with very little prep. Check out a few of my favorite and super-simple ways to make them...

Spaghetti Squash – Cut a squash in half lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds. Lightly drizzle the inside with olive, salt and pepper. Place face down on a cooking sheet and poke some fork holes into the rind. Place in a 400-degree oven for 40 minutes til the squash is golden brown around the edges. Scrape out the fluffy insides with a fork. You can simply serve with Olive oil or butter and grated parmesan cheese, or top with tomato sauce and ground beef or ground turkey.

Sauteed squash

Sauteed Brussel Sprouts – Cut the hard heads off, then slice each sprout into quarters. Sautee them up in a frying pan with olive oil, salt and pepper til they are golden brown. Fry up several slices of bacon crispy, dice up and mix in with the sprouts. Add a helping of grated cheese sprinkled on top and it is just so delicious!

Sauteed brussel sprouts

Riced Cauliflower – Place your cheese grater in a large pan and grate a head of cauliflower right in there. Place pan on a medium flame. Add olive oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper. When the cauliflower starts lightly browning sprinkle in a handful or so of shredded mozzarella cheese 'til it melts in then serve. Looks like rice but incredibly nutritious!

Balsamic Glazed Carrots – Buy a bag of whole large carrots and slice then in half, then into carrot sticks. Place on a baking sheet, sprinkle with salt, pepper and place in the over at 350 for 15 minutes and roast til the edges are brown and slightly crispy. Take out and then drizzle with balsamic vinegar and place back in the oven for 5 more minutes. Trust me this is a sweet and wickedly flavorful side dish.

Copper Fit Compression Socks – Copper infused compression socks are designed to provide support for muscle, joint stiffness, and soreness, as well as aid in recovery and performance by supporting improved circulation and oxygenation. Some studies indicate that athletes can run longer with less pain and recover faster. These socks are designed to help you move comfortably through the day.

Military Members – Relieve Daily Aches While Staying Loose & Limber – Here's 5 Ways How

It is an understatement that military life is physically stressful. A good friend of mine retired after 20 years with tours of Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, and Guantanamo Bay. Of course, his joints are sore, and muscles are tight, and he wanted to stop popping pain relievers every few hours. Both his doctor and chiropractor gave him a few pointers to help with his aches and pains and after several months he feels like a new man. Whether you stand all day or are physically active, the following is very simple, yet really effective - so pay attention and THAT's an ORDER!

Grueling military workout
  1. Seriously, Your Posture is Crucial – Stand up straight and tall with your stomach tucked in, head up, and shoulders pulled back. Good posture takes the pressure off your shoulders, back, hips and legs and REALLY makes a difference in how your overall body feels.
  2. Massage Therapy – If you've never gone to a massage therapist, it's time to hit the table. You won't believe how effective it is at improving circulation while breaking up knots and lactic acid in your body, and loosening your muscles, making you limber.
  3. Stretching During the Day – Simple hamstring, calf, glute, and lower back stretches helps to circulate the blood and keep you loose. Just a few times a day can help you tremendously while keeping you from cramping up. There's plenty of YouTube videos to show you how!
  4. OrthoticsGood orthotics for your shoes or boots can make an amazing difference in your overall body feeling good. They can actually help your posture, keeping things aligned which relieves stress on muscles and joints.
  5. Wearing Compression Garments – Compression sleeves (knees, elbows and ankles), socks, and back braces have been shown to help provide circulatory support for muscle stiffness, soreness and pain – reduce recovery time for aching muscles – and reduce strain and fatigue by keeping muscles warm.

Post-Workout Meals – The Most Important Thing You Can Do for Muscle Recovery

We've talked about the tremendous importance of Pre-Workout Meals to give you the fuel you need during exercise. And now we discuss the equally important subject of post-workout meals because having the right balance of protein and carbs is essential for muscle recovery.

It's all about glycogen storage. When you workout, you use up the glycogen stored in your muscles. When you eat the proper balance of foods shortly after exercising, it replaces what you used up, and it does it quickly. This is important in helping your body to:

  • Increase your protein for muscle growth
  • Lessen protein breakdown in your muscles
  • Restore the glycogen in your muscles
  • Boost the recovery of your muscles
Eggs and avocados

Again, the foods you eat should be a balance of protein, carbs, and yes, even fat. As far as a great replacement drink goes, we've talked about the benefits of chocolate milk, ergo, protein, carbs and fat.

Here are some great post-workout meal suggestions...

  • Tuna salad on whole grain toast
  • Grilled or broiled salmon with a sweet potato
  • Greek yogurt with assorted berries and granola crumbles
  • Sirloin cheeseburger (no bun) with a side salad
  • Grilled chicken with brown rice
  • Multi-grain bread with peanut butter drizzled with raw honey
  • Low sugar cereal with 2% milk and berries
  • Hummus with pita and veggies
  • Cottage cheese with berries or fruit slices
  • Protein Shake with berries or a banana
  • Grilled chicken with veggies
  • Scrambled Eggs with avocado on grain toast
  • Apple slices with peanut butter and cheddar cheese slices
Peanut butter, apples, and cheese

These food combinations are all really good mixes of protein carbs and fats that not only make for great recovery foods but taste great too! Enjoy!

All in the Family Workouts – It's the Healthiest Thing You Can Do!

If you have kids – from little ones to early teens – working out together is one of the best things you can do to create a wonderful bonding experience. But it also teaches kids the value of exercise at an early age while helping them become healthy. Face it, sitting in front of an XBOX for hours on end while piling junk food and soda down their throats is not only bad for them now, but damaging for years to come. You don't need hours of workout time, just get those bodies moving! So, here's a few ideas on how you can get the entire family engaged while making it a whole lot of fun!

Spending quality time with the family

Get those Doggies Walking!
Nightly dog walking has been proven to help with weight loss, lower blood pressure, and strengthen your heart. Getting your kids involved not only starts them on a healthy path, but also gives them a sense of responsibility. Just a great way to get everyone involved.

Have a Family Sports Night Once or Twice a Week
One day a week get everyone involved in a sporting activity and make it a different sport every week. Do soccer drills and even have a makeshift net from cones or garbage cans. Have a wiffleball tournament. Get a basketball and play a great game of H.O.R.S.E. or a rousing game of street hockey in the driveway!

Spending quality time with the family

Raking Leaves and Shoveling Snow
Have the kids help out and make the end reward jumping in the piles of leaves and snow! Snowball fights are optional!
