Top 10 Tips for Walking at Night

Walking outdoors on a beautiful night is not only great exercise, it's perfect for clearing your mind and relaxing. Here are our favorite Top 10 Tips to help keep your walks fun, productive, and safe.

Walking alone at night
  1. Plan Your Route – It's a REALLY good idea to have your route planned. Safety, terrain, traffic patterns, animals, and lighting should all be taken into consideration so you can walk with confidence.
  2. Always Let Somebody Know Where You're Going – Everyone, including you, will feel more comfortable knowing where you're going and approximately how long you plan to be gone.
  3. Wear Visible Clothing – This is especially true from dusk through sundown. Wear bright and reflective clothing so cars can see you.
  4. Walk with a Friend – The buddy system is always a good idea. It's fun, you'll talk, and it just makes things safer.
  5. Bring Your Cell Phone – As a safety precaution, this is a very important one. If you must talk, stop. Don't gab away with your head down.
  6. Well Lit Areas – Stay in areas where you can see people and animals, and people and cars can see you. Bring a compact flashlight if necessary.
  7. Easy On / Easy Off Compression Socks – wearing great socks is paramount to comfort during and after a walk. Wearing compression socks with added arch support and a cushioned foot bed, can provide added support to your muscles and joints, and help reduce stiffness and soreness afterward.
  8. Carry Pepper Spray – Even the best neighborhoods can have bad situations occur, whether it's unfriendly people or animals. Carrying pepper spray gives you a small level of protection, but may be just the thing you need to avoid injury or foul play. Research the laws in your area before carrying. Each state has different laws surrounding usage.
  9. Walk Toward Oncoming Traffic – You should see what's coming at you, and in front of you, at all times. Face traffic. Do not walk with your back to oncoming traffic!
  10. Never Assume Cars See You – Obviously, it's best to walk in areas with sidewalks, but if your route doesn't have them at all times, and you are walking in the street, get to the side quickly when encountering on-coming traffic. Don't assume the car can see you.

Recipe: Grilled Wings – Tangy n' Sweet with a Little Heat – Low Carb & Delicious

Americans are insane for chicken wings. The National Chicken Council estimated that 1.38 billion wings were consumed during that big championship pro football game back in February. That's enough wings to circle the earth 3 times – yeah, we love our wings.

Delicious chicken wings

While there are countless ways to prepare wings using a myriad of different ingredients, the simple beauty of this mouthwatering recipe is that it's easy to make, low on carbs, and it grills up fast. Oh yeah, and it is just so darned delicious. We guarantee you that the yum factor ranks wickedly high.

Ingredients You'll Need...

  • 2 lbs of chicken wings
  • 1/2 cup of low sodium teriyaki sauce
  • 1/4 cup of your favorite hot sauce
  • Juice of 1 whole lemon
  • 1 tablespoon of garlic powder
  • Montreal Steak Seasoning (Yeah, we said “steak”)
  • The teriyaki gives it a nice sweetness, hot sauce gives it the kick, and the acidity of the lemon juice gets into the meat giving it a tanginess. And the Montreal? Hang on, you'll see...

A Few Easy Steps to Prepare

  1. Place wings and all ingredients (except Montreal seasoning) in a large Ziplock bag.
  2. Squeeze bag and push wings around so they are completely covered and place in fridge for 2 hours.
  3. Remove wings from bag and spread out on a cookie sheet... then sprinkle on a light to medium coat of the Montreal seasoning.
  4. Fire up your grill to a medium heat and then place the Montreal side down. This creates an almost blackened type of crust on the outside.
  5. Cook 7-10 minutes per side, making sure you get that outer crispy char.
  6. Now pour yourself a nice cold beverage and begin to devour those juicy bad boys. That's and order...

Ready to Do Your Planting? Then You Definitely Want to Avoid THESE 4 Things

Spending a weekend planting can be relaxing for the mind and therapeutic for the soul. Colorful flowers and plants around your house, apartment, or condo not only look great, but they make you feel so good. Whether you have a green thumb or not, there are things you really need to look out for before you spend a lot of money and time rummaging through the dirt.

Some Plants Just Don't Like Each Other – Just like some people, certain flowers and plants really don't get along. Some can be dominant and overtake others (especially if they're sharing the same pot) and you really should talk to your local garden center or surf the web for a number of good articles with great advice before you actually dig in.

Wack Those Weeds – Ugh, weeds are popping up among your annuals and perennials. With potted plants, good potting soil should keep them away - although the wind can spread their nasty seeds to your porch or deck. In that case you'll want to refill with fresh soil. A good way to suppress them in your garden is laying down a heavy bed of mulch. It helps them from pushing through and keeps the ground moist as well. If they do start to show, spray them with a natural herbicide or keep a spray bottle of vinegar around which really does the trick.

Beautifully gardened house

Slimy Little Buggers – My gorgeous hostas were getting pinholes in the leaves and before you knew it, huge holes were consuming them. My lawn guy said: Slugs, they dine on certain plants like it's and all-you-can-eat buffet. Know what else slugs love? Beer! Cut down some plastic cups two inches high, fill them with beer, and place them among your plants. The following morning, many will be floating in their drunken demise.

The Aches & Pains Afterwards – Spending hours digging through soil with your hands, or hunched over on your knees, brings a whole lot of achiness and stiffness for days. One thing that's been shown to help relieve those strains and pains while helping to recover quicker is Compression Garments like knee sleeves, compression gloves, and Back Pro belts. Compression wear has long been known for providing muscle and circulatory support.

5 Must-Read Dog Walking Tips for Both YOU and Your Furry Buddy

Walking your dog is way more than letting him do his business, then getting back inside. It's not only great bonding time, it's also an excellent form of exercise. A good half-hour can provide the fresh air and blood pumping through the muscles you both need. In a Michigan State Study, it was found that 60 percent of dog walkers got what was considered moderate or vigorous exercise.

Bring Water – In warmer weather, dogs can over heat faster than we do. When he's panting, he's sweating, so bring water to avoid dehydration. That goes for YOU too! “Dogs that drink during exercise stay cooler and are able to burn glucose more effectively. ~ Pet Education

Wear Good Shoes – YOU need to be comfortable and good shoes are a must. Add in a good pair of orthotic insoles and it can help reduce foot and body aches and can help improve stability, posture, and alignment.

Dog

Choose the Right Leash – Again, this is for both of you. Whether it's Flexi-Lead, leather, or chain, your dog needs optimal comfort, so do a little research to find what's best. Your hands need to remain comfortable too while keeping your dog in control. Think about getting a pair of form fitting Compression Gloves. They're like a second skin and can offer excellent support and relief from sore muscles and painful joint stiffness in your wrist, palms and fingers.

If You Are Able - Walk at a Brisk Pace – If you and your dog can physically move at a slightly quicker pace, you'll both get your cardio up and burn a more few calories. Plus, it'll keep your pooch occupied on moving along so he doesn't notice distractions like every squirrel along the way, because that can get crazy!

Give Him a Sniff Break – When he stops to do his business, let him sniff around for a few moments. Dogs are curious and this lets them know who's near-by and what's going on around them.

Weekend Athletes: How Would You Like to Reduce Pain, Stiffness, Stress & Strain?

The arrival of spring is a beautiful thing for those of us who want to stay active with sports and exercise. After a long winter, the warmer weather is calling us to get out there and start moving that body again!

Many of us had limited activity during the winter months. Whether you're playing softball, golf, jogging, walking, tennis, mountain biking, or whatever you love, you're going to be using muscles that haven't seen action in a while and you KNOW what that means stiffness, strain, aches and pain. Sure, you're all excited to hit the batting cage, the practice tee, and biking with your buddies on that first nice weekend – but come Monday morning, everything just hurts, and pain relievers are your friend.

Biking

Maybe its time you made a new friend, one that can help reduce strain and muscle fatigue while helping to provide support for muscle stiffness, soreness, and pain. Say hi to your new good buddies: Compression garments. These garments have long been known for providing muscle and circulatory support. Their benefits are backed by extensive research, as compression wear has been shown to reduce the recovery time of muscles by keeping them warm.

Well-made Compression Garments are designed to fit discreetly and comfortably under your clothes and come in a variety of applications to fit your specific needs:

  • Elbow, Knee, and Ankle Sleeves
  • Back Pro for Lower Back Support
  • Easy on / Easy Off Compression Socks
  • Balance Performance Orthotic Insoles
  • Anatomically Designed Rapid Relief Hot & Cold Therapy Wraps
  • Form Fitting Compression Gloves (that fit nicely in a golf glove or baseball mitt)

Some studies even indicate athletes can run longer with less pain and recover faster. Many athletes who wear compression sleeves believe that it improves their performance, also stating they have more energy and that they avoid injury while exercising.

Why We Ache Days AFTER Physical Activity - and the Best Ways to STOP It!

Everybody loves springtime. The weather gets warm, the grass turns green, and we finally get to spend time outside. What's not to love? Well, if you're like me, springtime also means more aches and pains. Working on the lawn, raking leaves, picking up branches, planting, laying down wood chips and soil, along with a few thousand other things, springtime brings with it a lot of work – tiring work. That means aches and pains are sure to follow.

Interestingly, most of us feel sore a couple of days after a lot of physical activity. As I understand it, that is the result of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, or DOMS. DOMS occurs when you work muscles that aren't used regularly, like when you shovel dirt for hours. The worst pain from the new activity will typically occur a couple days after the activity itself. Exercising those muscles more often, and the DOMS effect will decrease.

Getting out during spring

So, instead of popping pain relievers every few hours, try these more natural approaches in helping reduce and relieve those aches and pains.

  • Stay Hydrated. This is huge because water helps to flush the lactic acid from your body.
  • Massage Your Muscles. Using a foam roller on sore muscles has been shown effective 48-hours after strenuous activity.
  • Walking. If your legs are sore, this will help blood circulation in the muscles.
  • Hot and Cold Therapy. This helps reduce inflammation, swelling, and discomfort. See previous article in Fit Stories > http://bit.ly/2GErF7p

Further, an article on Healthline.com entitled, 23 Things to Know About Acute and Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, states that, “Wearing a compression garment for 24-hours after exercise can reduce DOMS and speed up recovery of muscle function. Compression garments hold the muscles in place and help increase blood flow for faster recovery.”

How I Lost 50 Pounds Avoiding 4 Foods

A while back, I let myself go. I ate like garbage, looked garbage, and felt like garbage. I've always thought the word DIET was such an ugly word, so instead of striking off on a diet (starving myself and thinking about food 24/7), I went online to learn about foods that might be preventing me from losing weight.

Depending on your body type and daily exercise, here are the foods that kept coming up as hindrances to weight loss. So, I decided to cut out these foods until I got to my desired weight.

Getting on the scale

Important caveat: I replaced these foods with smarter choices, including more veggies – walked more - and dropped 50 lbs in 12 months. YOU might be different. As always, check with your doctor before starting any weight loss effort, and discuss what's right for you. But THIS worked for me. I ate good, tasty foods and NEVER starved myself.

Grains

Bread – Tragic, but true. The more you eat, the more you crave. It's the carbs, and carbs that aren't burned turn to sugar. Starchy ingredients, gluten and wheat are hard to pass through the digestive system and cause you to feel bloated. I know this sounds brutal, but you can add it back in later on.

Soda: Regular & Diet – A 12 oz can of cola has 39 grams of sugar which equals 10 teaspoons, and anything “artificial” doesn't belong in your body. If I could switch to seltzer, you can too.

Pasta – I'm half Italian and giving up pasta and bread was like torture. Not that pasta is terrible for you, but if you eat a lot of it - there's 42 grams of carbs per serving before you load it up with sauce, cheese, etc. Again, I added it back in later on.

Salted Processed Snacks – Pretty much a no brainer.

Now, I ate a lot of these 4 and dropping them cold turkey wasn't easy. But they say it takes 21 days to create a new habit. Well, after 3 weeks this actually became easy, the pounds began to come off, and I now eat bread and pasta in moderation. While this worked for me, check with an expert to find out what's best for you.

Are you Ready to Laugh?

You slither into the car on a Monday morning while forcing your body and your brain to gear up for the workday we all dread. While slurping on your coffee and shoveling a bagel down your pie hole, you've got your choice: music or talk radio. Well, I did something a couple of years ago that not only changed how I approached my work week, it's had an amazing impact on how I feel every day.

Laughable

I got satellite radio for my car, and the choice of music and talk is overwhelming. But when rummaging through the dial, I landed on a comedy channel – comedians doing short bits, 24/7. Before you knew it, I did indeed start laughing regularly and it felt great. There's several comedy channels and I switch back and forth with some music and talk in between, and I swear to you that laughing on a regular basis changes your outlook and it's VERY noticeable.

Forever you've heard the term, “Laughter is the best medicine”, but what's crazy is, for so many of us, laughing just might be a better cure than any pharmaceutical company can charge for. Scientific studies have shown proven evidence that laughing has a profound and positive effect on both the body and the mind. The first thing it does is shift our thoughts away from negativity, releasing endorphins that relieve stress and relax your muscles. In fact, it actually increases your body's immune cells while decreasing stress hormones within. On the Mayo Clinic website, they say, “Positive thoughts can actually release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more-serious illnesses” and, “laughter may ease pain by causing the body to produce its own natural painkillers.”

Laughable

Guys, this is no joke, yucking it up might be one of the most natural forms of healthcare there is. But, just be careful if you're actually laughing your @$$ off, because you'll end up sitting funny and people will start to talk.

Copper Fit Pro Series™ Compression Sleeves - These copper infused compression garments are designed to give you the most comfortable, breathable, and consistent support for your joints and back, providing you with muscle and circulatory support. Protein Packed Chili Recipe

When you talk about comfort foods, a mouthwatering, tangy bowl of chili has to be right up near the top of the list. And, if you look at the ingredients, there are some nice health benefits, too - it's low in saturated fat while it packs a ton of protein and iron. When you add beans, that adds a nice amount of dietary fiber and potassium. A big bowl of chili (2 cups) can have up to 32 grams of protein and 16.8 grams of fiber.

So, here's the recipe that I've been making for years that the family goes nuts over...

Bowl of chili

Ingredients: 2 lbs of grass-fed beef, 85-15 ratio • 2 tbls olive oil • 1 large diced onion • 4 minced garlic cloves • 2 cans of diced tomato 15 oz • 1 can of tomato sauce 15 oz • 2 tbls of chili powder • 2 tspns of cocoa powder • 2 cans of red kidney beans 15 oz

Instructions: You'll need a large pot and pan. Pour the olive oil in the pot over a low flame. Add in the minced garlic, and diced onion cooking it down for about 2 minutes. In your large frying pan, add your beef and cook until it's about 80% done. Drain the grease and add the meat into the pot. Then add tomato sauce and diced tomatoes stirring it all in. Next add chili and cocoa powder, stirring it again. Cook on low heat for 15 minutes and then stir in kidney beans. Put your flame on simmer for another hour and 15 minutes, leaving the lid on the pot about a quarter inch open. When you hear it bubble, give it a good stir.

Bowl of chili

Suggested toppings: Shredded cheddar or Monterrey Jack, sour cream, hot sauce, diced scallions, crispy fried canned onions, squeeze in fresh lime juice, and tortilla chips for dipping if you like! I'm ready to eat my computer screen, so, it's off to the kitchen I go for some amazing homemade chili!

Stand All Day at Work? You Really Need to See This...

Calling all people who stand all day for a living...those in retail, construction workers, teachers, first responders, pharmacists, waiters and waitresses, cooks, mothers, medical, those in the military, and so many countless others. You guys are well-aware of the aches, pains, and physical exhaustion that standing can cause. We're here to tell you that there are several forms of relief (other than popping pain relievers all day) that can really make a difference in feeling better.

Standing all day on the job
  • REALLY Good Shoes – This may seem obvious, but we can't stress enough, that above all, investing in shoes with excellent support is paramount – in other words: DO NOT cheap out! The last thing you want is plantar fasciitis – and if you've experienced the horrific pain, you know how crucial good support is. And seriously, ditch the flats, heels, and flip flops – they are causing you a lot of unneeded pain.
  • Work on Your Posture – Stand up straight and tall with your stomach tucked in, head up, and shoulders pulled back. Good posture REALLY makes a difference in how your body feels.
  • Orthotics – Good orthotics for your shoes can make an amazing difference in your overall body feeling good. They can actually help your posture, keeping things aligned which relieves stress on muscles and joints.
  • Stretching During the Day – Hamstring, calf, glute, and lower back stretches helps to circulate the blood and keep you loose. Just a few times a day can help tremendously.
  • Wearing Compression GarmentsCompression sleeves (knees, elbows and ankles), socks, and back braces have been shown to help provide circulatory support for muscle stiffness, soreness and pain – reduce recovery time for aching muscles – and reduce strain and fatigue by keeping muscles warm.
Standing all day on the job

Of course, there's other things like staying hydrated (to reduce lactic acid build-up) and getting proper rest – all of which can help you feel good while performing your best. Now get back to work!

Think Age Can Stop You? Ha – Time to Think Again!

I was a heck of a hockey player when I was 20. My team was the US National champions - yeah, I was THAT good. Jump ahead two decades and I'm playing in a men's league against guys half my age. I did pretty well and enjoyed it for few years. But as the seasons went by, the players got a little younger and faster, and I got a little older and slower. It was really hard to deal with and upset me terribly – that is, until I had a much-needed shift in my mindset and approach. I refused to give up playing, so, I joined an over 40 league and guess what... I was awesome - actually, one of the best players out there! Damn, it was so much fun again!

Hockey injury

This was one heck of cathartic experience - even though I can't stop getting older, that can't possibly stop me from enjoying my life. I love to go on hikes, play golf, attend rock concerts, travel, walk my two rescue pitbulls, along with landscaping and DYI projects at home. No way was my age going to stop me from enjoying things, so, once again, I had to change my mindset and my approach. I started making little changes that were easy, like cutting down on processed foods and sugar, drinking more water, taking supplements, and wearing light-weight compression garments when active. Most importantly, I started working on my mental attitude and not letting the stupid stuff bother me, because it's almost all stupid, and SO not worth it.

Dogs

Such simple changes were easy to implement and have made a monumental difference in doing what I enjoy and feeling my best every day. Yeah, I can still do all the things I love - and I can do them at MY pace (well, sometimes at my dog's pace). Living Limitless and loving it.

Kurt Russel QuoteBill Murray Quote

You Want Me To Walk HOW MANY Steps a Day... Are You Crazy?!

I sit all day behind a desk-top and write stuff for a living. I put in some long days, planting my rump in a chair for up to 12 hours. Yeah, I know, being sedentary isn't healthy, but I'm good at what I do and I'm not about to fulfill my lifelong dream of playing in the NHL.

Now, walking is good for the body and it's easy, so I bought a pedometer and I see I'm doing 3,000 steps, (which is roughly a mile and a half) which I thought sounded pretty good... Until I searched the web, finding numerous articles claiming that the magical number is 10,000 steps a day - which garnered the response, “What chu tawkin' bout Willis?!” That's close to 5 miles, how am I supposed to perform THAT little miracle?” That would intimidate a whole lot of people who would stop before even starting.

Dog

So, upon doing a bit more research, the real goal should be this: If you're not doing anything at all, then start small. If you're doing a little, push to do a little more. So, I challenged myself to see how many steps I can increase daily. I'm doing the things you've always heard like parking farther away, taking the stairs instead of an elevator, and while I don't have a dog, I started walking with my neighbor while he walks his dog, although the tinkle and poop breaks get a little tiresome – the dog, not me.

Couple walking

Being fairly sedentary for so long, my calves and ankles were sore, so I started wearing good compression socks which helped relieve the achiness a ton. And, before you know it, I'm up to 6,000 steps a day and I swear, I really do feel much better. You know the saying, Just Do It? That's right.

Heat vs Ice for Pain? – Let's Settle This Mystery

The world is full of great mysteries perplexing us for eons... the lost city of Atlantis, the great pyramids, the infield fly rule... and will someone finally please tell me “Who's on first”? But one of the biggest mysteries of all is whether to use heat or ice for pain. It's an important topic because so many people get it wrong, which does a lot more harm than good. So, we're here to break it down simply...

Pain relief with heat/ice

HEAT is for non-inflammatory pain – NEVER for fresh injuries or inflammation. (Think of it this way - what do you think happens when you put something hot on top of something inflamed? Ouch.) Heat is for relieving stiffness, soreness, aching, muscle knots, spasms, and tightness - it increases circulation and blood-flow to the muscles. This is why a hot shower or bath can do wonders. It's also good to warm muscles before stretching and activity. (Note: Well-made compression garments keep muscles and joints warm, helping to prevent pain during and after physical activity.)

ICE is for reducing inflammation, swelling and pain from fresh injuries – NEVER for general muscle soreness, achiness, or tightness. Icing (cryotherapy for the science nerds) is used for new injuries, ligament sprains, tendonitis, strained, pulled, or torn muscles. It reduces blood flow to the area, reducing inflammation and relieving pain. You can ice for several days with swelling (generally for 10 minutes at a clip, once an hour). But once the swelling subsides, it's recommended to then apply moist heat that gets into the muscles to loosen them once again.

Pain relief with ice

This is a simple explanation of a longtime conundrum, that we hope can be put to rest. There's a lot of great articles online that break it down further, but hopefully we solved this great mystery. But for heaven's sake, man, can somebody, anybody, please just tell me Who's on first?

Copper Fit Rapid Relief Wraps for Hot & Cold Therapy – Stay mobile while you recover with targeted pain management to sore muscles and joints. Rapid Relief Wraps are anatomically designed for each body part, featuring an interior pouch for its customized pliable hot and cold gel pack. For heat therapy, place it in the microwave (according to instructions), for cold therapy, place it in the freezer. Our revolutionary design allows you to stay mobile during recovery.

Ask Copper Fit: Is ”No Pain, No Gain” Actually Damaging Me?

It was the exercise mantra of the early 1980's for testosterone-laden muscle-bound monsters and aerobic workout maniacs. “No Pain, No Gain” or “Feel the Burn” could be heard throughout gyms everywhere, (like it was some kind of badge of honor) accompanied by primordial grunts, blood-curdling screams, along with some seriously salty language. But it's the year 2019 and we know better. We know that living with pain is downright awful and to suggest that you won't have any gain without it is beyond absurd.

No pain

Pain is a warning signal, it's your body's way of telling you that something is wrong, and you need to either slow down or shut it down all together. The old-school macho bs that told you to push through the pain, to push yourself beyond your physical limits was, well, pretty-damned stupid. Now, discomfort or achiness is one thing, lactic acid is forming in the muscles and you're tired and sore. But if you start to feel acute pain and you keep going, there might be some serious or even permanent damage taking place.

In an August 2014, Women's Health Magazine article entitled, “Why No Pain, No Gain is a Bad Idea”, Michael Boyle, owner of Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning in Woburn, Massachusetts says, “Discomfort as a result of exercise should be limited to your working muscles alone. You need to gauge when and where pain occurs during an exercise. The reality is, you shouldn't have any discomfort except for muscle fatigue.”

Of course, warming up, proper stretching, and staying hydrated is a given, and with the recent popularity of technologically advanced compression sleeves, muscles and joints stay warm, and healthy. So, I hope I made things “painfully” clear, that No Pain, No Gain is a horribly flawed fallacy that will never hold true.
